A rare opportunity has arisen to join our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) as a Patient Liaison Advisor. The post is full-time (job share will be considered) and based at the Royal Marsden Sutton site, though occasional travel to Chelsea for meetings/training and potentially to cover the service may be required.
The PALS service is a vital part of the Royal Marsden’s service to patients, relatives and the wider community, providing an informal way to resolve concerns, answer queries and signpost to relevant services, within the hospital and beyond.
PALS is also involved with supporting bereaved relatives/friends and managing some of the processes involved following the death of a patient in the hospital. PALS advisors meet with bereaved relatives and support them through the process of registering a death and signpost to further support as needed, via formal bereavement meetings. This can be a very rewarding part of the work of the PALS advisor and training will be given relating to this.
We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills, who ideally is a health care professional. Training will be given in relation to the processes with which the PALS advisors resolve concerns. The ability to communicate effectively with people in challenging circumstances and with bereaved and distressed relatives is essential. The aim of the PALS service is to help diffuse difficult situations and helping to provide a mediation service between the patients/relatives and the wider clinical team. The role can be challenging but very varied and involves meeting and working with people in all areas of the organisation.
