THE ROYAL MARSDEN NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

Clinical Oncology Fellow The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is one of the leading cancer centres in the world and has an international reputation for the care and treatment it provides. The associated Institute of Cancer Research has a similar reputation for research and development.

The partnership between the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research constitutes a centre of excellence for research and development, education, treatment and care in cancer. Together they are acknowledged to be one of the largest comprehensive cancer centres in the world.

The Royal Marsden serves a local, regional, national and international population from two hospital sites, Chelsea and Sutton. We are looking to appoint enthusiastic and forward thinking doctors to the post of Clinical Fellow (Registrar level) in Clinical Oncology in our rotation in September 2019 and March 2020. If an applicant would like to specialise in a particular tumour subsite other than these those advertised, consideration would be given to this at the stage of interview.

The duration of each post would be for a minimum of 6 months, and up to 12 months. Details of the example job plans are included in the JD. The post holder will be based on the unit at one of the two sites, Chelsea or Sutton at the Royal Marsden Hospital, and preference for role should be indicated in the job application process. In order to fulfill the responsibilities of the post the appointee will be required to demonstrate that they have experience in oncological management, and preferably will have MRCP or equivalent.

The post may also be attractive to a candidate preparing for FRCR. The post would be particularly suitable for experienced international oncologists wishing to gain further specialist experience in an international tertiary centre. The post could also be tailored to an experienced medical doctor who having completed Foundation and Core Medical competencies (or equivalent), wish to gain a period of focused experience and training in Clinical Oncology before pursuing ST3 training.

The specialty of Clinical Oncology comprises management of cancer using both radiotherapy and systemic therapy (chemotherapy, hormone therapy and biological agents). It offers a unique opportunity to develop expertise in managing cancer patients and engaging in clinical research and academia.

A multidisciplinary team approach and effective communication is integral to the specialty of oncology. Most of an average week is spent in outpatient clinics, prescribing chemotherapy, planning radiotherapy and inpatient care.

For further details on the specialty and training please go to the RCR website. We encourage all those who are interested in a career in Clinical Oncology to apply.
